Solar Eclipse Viewing in Vancouver

If you weren't able to purchase special glasses for viewing this year's astronomical event, there is still a chance for you to witness this spectacle. There are three places in the lower mainland where hosted eclipse specific events will be happening.

Click the links to go to their event pages or websites for more information: (1) H.R. MacMillan Space Centre is holding a community viewing party with entrance by donation. (2) Science World at Telus World of Science has partnered with the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada to hold a special program for the event. (3) The UBC Physics and Astronomy Department is also hosting an event. Visit their respective event announcement for location details and particulars.

Please do not (even) try to look at the sun directly if you were not able to purchase "eclipse glasses" from a reputable dealer. The darkest pair of sunglasses will definitely NOT protect your eyes. Even "regular" welder's goggles do not provide sufficient protection to look at the sun unless they have a 13 shade or higher (experts recommend a 14 shade). The Canadian Association of Optometrists has a page on Solar Eclipse Safety. They also have instructions on how to create a pinhole viewer to project the image so you can view the eclipse indirectly.
